Vector & Source Reduction Technicians

Field technicians are responsible for controlling the county mosquitoes

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Perform activities to control mosquitoes

  • Collect field data regarding mosquitoes

  • Source Reduction performs activities that control mosquitoes in unique habitats

  • Day Shift treats for mosquito larvae or pupae in

    • pools, woodlots, flooded fields, ditches, sewage lagoons, drains etc.

  • Night Shift treats for adult mosquitoes through

    • yard treatments

    • countywide road treatment

GIS Technician

Assists the Operation Manager with GIS operations

SUMMARY OF DUTIES, WAGE & REQUIREMENTS

  • Assists with GIS tasks and workflows

  • Create and edit agency maps

  • Performs data entry, analysis, and reporting

  • Familiar with ESRI ArcGIS 10.X

Hours & Wages

  • $13.75 per hour

  • Up to 40 hours per week

  • Seasonal position is from May through September annually

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree (achieved or in‐process) with experience and/or coursework in data analysis, GIS, geography, spatial analysis, cartography, and/or programming

  • Valid State of Michigan driver's license - no more than 5 points on record and no restrictions

  • Proficient in reading maps and following directions

  • Interact well with the public

  • Pass physical and drug tests as well as a criminal background check

Biology Assistants

Biology Assistants conduct surveillance of the county's mosquito & covid populations for any disease threats

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Monitor mosquito populations and mosquito-borne disease

  • Trap and collect mosquitoes around the county

  • Identify and sort mosquitoes

  • Collect and sample dead corvids (crows and blue jays)

  • Test the efficacy of products

Clerk Typists

Register public calls and log information for field operations

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

  • Answer phones

  • Assist residents that visit Mosquito Control

  • Schedule treatments

  • Register requests or complaints

  • Data entry

Requires technology skills such as word processing and effective public communication.

Education Assistant

Are you creative and have a heart for educating? Do you enjoy speaking with people? Do you like filming and photography? What about photo editing or graphic design?

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

This department educates county residents on all SCMAC's operations as well as their own responsibilities via social media and by attending local events. It also films and photographs all operations for educative and training purposes.

Skills in photography, filming and graphics design are beneficial. Photos and videos are edited and new content is created for training, display or public distribution.

Hours & Wages

  • Positions start a $1 above the State of Michigan minimum wage

    • 1st year seasonals $11.75/hr

    • GIS technician $13.75/hr

  • Season is from April through September annually

  • Full time positions available on both the day and night shifts

  • Part time positions available only on the night shift

Almost half of the jobs at SCMAC require working the night shift. Determination of shift assignments is at the discretion of management.

Qualifications

  • 18 years of age before June 1, 2021

  • Field, Biology, & Education must pass the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) Pesticide Applicator Core test

  • A mandatory 12 hour training session held in April

    • 8 hours on Friday, 4 hours on Saturday

    • Session reviews material for MDARD tests

    • Test administered on Saturday following the completion of the review

  • Returning field and biology employees must be MDARD 7F certified.
