What are the Ds of Mosquito Prevention?
DRAIN standing water
DRAIN STANDING WATER from garbage cans, house gutters, pool covers, coolers, toys, flower pots or any other containers where sprinkler or rain water has collected.
DISCARD old tires, drums, bottles, cans, pots and pans, broken appliances and other items that aren’t being used.
EMPTY AND CLEAN birdbaths and pets’ water bowls at least once or twice a week.
PROTECT boats and vehicles from rain with tarps that don’t accumulate water.
MAINTAIN the water balance (pool chemistry) of swimming pools. Empty plastic swimming pools when not in use.
DETER mosquitoes with a repellent
APPLY MOSQUITO REPELLENT to bare skin and clothing to keep mosquitoes away.
Always use repellents according to the label. Repellents with DEET (recommended), picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, and IR3535 are effective.

DUSK & DAWN is mosquito time
Limit outdoor exposure or take precautions during this time as mosquitoes are most active.
DRESS to prevent bites
COVER YOUR SKIN with clothing if you must be outside when mosquitoes are active. Wear shoes, socks, long pants, and long sleeves.
USE MOSQUITO NETTING to protect young children, especially those younger than 2 months.
COVER DOORS AND WINDOWS with screens to keep mosquitoes out of your house. Repair broken screens on windows, doors, porches, and patios.

How it works
Create a 3 or 4 panel cartoon strip based on the Ds of Mosquito Prevention
How to enter
We're excited to see some strong cartoons this year!
Students can work with any materials they want, but all cartoons must be entered using the entry form.
Parents or teachers can submit the entry form online as a .png, or .jpg.
The contest is open for entries until May 22, 2023, 8am, so here's some information to help you get started:

Cartoon:
3 to 4 panels; title, dialogue (encouraged); Use any materials, from crayons to clay to found objects.Write:
Artist’s statement - Tell us about what you have drawn and how it represents the Ds of Mosquito Prevention.
Fill out the rest of the required information and have a parent or guardian sign the entry form.
Submit:
Enter the contest online.
Take a high-res digital photo or scan of the cartoon in good lighting and upload it to our site as a .jpg or .png file.
The other option is to drop off the original at our office.
If the cartoon was created on its own piece of paper, attach the entry form on the front with a staple in the corner.

JuDGING & Prizes
Cartoons will be judged on the following parameters:
Artistic merit: Based on artistic skill
Creativity: Representation of the contest theme and use of the "Ds", and the unique approach to the cartoon strip
Theme communication: How well the contest theme is expressed in both the artwork and the written statement
Cartoons will be grouped and judged by the following grade groups for each contest:
Grades K-6
Grades 7-12
Finalists from the grade groups will be selected and compete for the following prizes:
Grade K-6 ~ 1st $60; 2nd $40; 3rd $20
Grade 7-12: 1st $100; 2nd $70; 3rd $50
Public voting may help determine the winners contest. Winners may be announced in May 2023
Rules & Disqualifications
Contest is open to all students residents of Saginaw County.
Cartoons that are not original works, contain logos, or copyright imagery will be disqualified.
Only one application per student per contest. Only the first entry for each contest will be considered, any additional entries will be disqualified.
Changes to the contest is at SCMAC's discretion.
